In the not-to-distant-future, a newly transfered Detroit police officer is remade into an indistructable cybornetic cop after being dismembered by a gang of thungs in an abandoned warehouse. Reborn as Robocop he is programed to serve and protect the citizens of Detroit and eliminate the rampant crime in the city streets so that a massive city-wide reconstruction project can get underway. But once he has completed his task, he sets his sites on the corruption inside Securities Concepts Inc.- the corporation that created him.
Dick Jones: Come in, officer! Usually I don't see people after hours, but in your case I'll make an exception.
RoboCop: You are under arrest.
Dick Jones: Oh? What's the charge?
RoboCop: Aiding and abetting a known felon.
Dick Jones: Looks like I'm in pretty serious trouble. You better take me in.
RoboCop: I will.
[begins to malfunction due to program]
Dick Jones: What's the matter, officer? I'll tell you what's the matter. It's a little insurance policy called Directive Four - my little contribution to your psychological profile. It says that any attempt to arrest a senior officer of OCP results in shutdown. What did you think, that you were an ordinary officer? No, you're our product! And we can't have our products turn against us, can we?
[Robocop continues to resist Directive Four shutdown]
Dick Jones: Ah, still a little fight left. Well maybe you'd like to meet an old friend.

ROBOCOP is an intelligent science fiction thriller and social satire, one with class and style. The film, set in Old Detroit in the year 1991, stars Peter Weller as Murphy, a lieutenant on the city's police force. 1991's Detroit suffers from rampant crime and a police department run by a private contractor (Security Concepts Inc.) whose employees (the cops) are threatening to strike. To make matters worse, a savage group of cop-killers has been terrorizing the city. On Murphy's first day of duty, after his transfer from another precinct, these cop-killers brutally murder him by shooting off his limbs one by one. (Orion Pictures had to edit this extremely graphic scene in order to get an R rating from the M.P.A.A.)
